DANVILLE (WSLS10) - Every six years, the state requires transit systems throughout the Commonwealth to create a six year tentative plan for their respective systems.

Danville's plan, which was just presented to city council Tuesday night, includes things like possibly adding bike racks to the front of buses and possibly creating a nighttime schedule for fixed route buses.

"Fixed route ridership increased over 14% since 2010," said Danville Transit Director, Marc Adelman.

Adelman says the fixed route ridership actually decreased for the current fiscal year because of low gas prices.

The plan, which was created by a consulting company, also calls for adjusting the routes of the fixed route buses so that the buses are on time more often.

An adjustment was made in August when around 18% of the buses weren't on time.

Adelman says more adjustments, in the future, are one of the transit system's top priorities, especially for the reservation service, which allows people to pay $4 per ride and get a ride 21 hours a day six days a week.

"The consultant did identify some specific recommendations for consideration that we're possibly going to need to look at over the next two to three years," Adelman said, in regards to the reservation service.

He didn't go into details, but one passenger said the adjustment that has already been made is helping.

"Yes, it is," said Michael Nelson. He says he has been riding the buses for about 21 years. "It's very easy."

One thing the transit system is doing that is not part of the plan is creating a new bus stop that is closer to the front door of the mall.

The mall recently stopped allowing city buses to drop passengers off at the front door, saying that it was creating too much trash and litter around the door.

The new stop is expected to be about 150 yards away from the door and should be completed in June.
