Hampton Roads Regional Jail releases details on Jamycheal Mitchell's death

PORTSMOUTH (WSLS 10) - The Portsmouth Commonwealth's Attorney asked Virginia State Police to investigate new allegations made into the death of Jamycheal Mitchell at Hampton Roads Regional Jail.

Mitchell died of starvation at the jail in 2015, a few months after being arrested for stealing junk food.

A medical examiner said the 24-year-old died from heart failure accompanied by severe weight loss.

State police opened a criminal investigation into Mitchell's death last summer.

The jail already faces a $60 million lawsuit from Mitchell's family over claims that he was poorly treated.
