VDOT debuts improved Virginia 511 app

The app now offers turn by turn navigation.

VIRGINIA – Virginia highway travelers have a new improved tool to help them on the roads.

The Virginia Department of Highway Transportation has launched an updated Virginia 511 traveler information app. It provides real-time traffic information about road conditions, congestion and highway work zones.

The new version of the app has a better and more user-friendly alert system. But the big change is turn by turn navigation. VDOT partnered with Waze, a free crowd-sourced navigation app to provide the turn by turn directions.

"This is about reducing congestion, keeping people moving and providing better information to travelers so they can make informed decisions about their travel plans," said Jason Bond, VDOT spokesperson.

If you already have the Virginia 511 app installed, the changes will show up as an update.
