Online mattress craze leads to thousands of dollars in sales at Roanoke Rescue Mission

Online stores let customers donate mattress to local charity for full refund

ROANOKE, Va. – Who knew that your lack of sleep would translate into thousands of dollars for the Roanoke Rescue Mission?

It's 100 percent true, thanks to an online mattress craze.

“The online mattress craze has really picked up, so as it has picked up, our donations are picked up, because customers are trying them out,” Tracy Altizer, chief officer of development, at The Roanoke Rescue Mission said.

The popularity of purchasing online mattresses in a box is trending.

So is the latest return policy for many online mattress companies.

“Companies will allow the customer to donate them to a charity. The customer just has to then give them the tax receipt for the donation back to the company in order to receive their personal refund,” Altizer said.

Christopher Johnson, who delivers the mattresses, sees them firsthand.

“Conditions that we normally get are in perfect condition,” Johnson said.

“Definitely seen an increase in the sales,” Altizer said.

Altizer calls it a win-win situation for everyone.

“You know, we can sell them for several hundred dollars, it's a high ticket item for a store like this,” Altizer said. “We comply with all laws that require us to sanitize them.”

Altizer says as soon as the mattresses are placed on their sales floor, they’re usually sold on the same day.
