WYTHE COUNTY, Va. – Wythe County deputies are investigating an apparent murder-suicide.Â
Deputies were called around 6 p.m. Wednesday to a home on the 700 block of Murphyville Road in the Rural Retreat area.Â
When deputies arrived, they found a man and woman dead inside the home.Â
The sheriff's office says Curtis M. Cook, 72, shot his wife, Peggy Ann Cook, 76, and then killed himself.
"The people in the neighborhood they knew them, they didn't see it coming, the family didn't see it coming, everybody is going to be wondering maybe I could've done something to stop this but you can't stop everything," said Wythe County Sheriff Keith Dunagan.
The couple's daughter called police after finding their bodies inside the home.
She told police she had been with them earlier in the day and then told her parents she would see them later that night.
Police followed blood spatter toward the bedroom in the house to find the scene.
"They located the wife laying on the bed with a gunshot wound to the head and the husband laying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head and a pistol had fallen half behind his leg and halfway sticking out," said Dunagan.
A medical examiner will perform an autopsy.Â
