Pink Ribbon tennis event in Salem raises money for American Cancer Society

The tournament raised more than $7,000

SALEM, Va. – The Hidden Valley Country Club hosted a Pink Ribbon tennis event in Salem to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The Pink Ribbon tennis event was a round-robin-style tournament on eight courts with around 40 people participating.

The event included a clinic with the pros, matches, a luncheon, and a raffle.

Organizers said their goal was to raise money while raising awareness about breast cancer.

“We want to honor those people who’ve been touched by breast cancer, whether they’ve had it, whether they’ve had a family member, we want a chance to honor those guys and maybe raise some money through the American Cancer Society to find a cure,” said Kellie Kessel, one of the organizers.

“This is so important. The tennis community has so many families and friends that have been affected by breast cancer and we want to show them that as a survivor you can still get out there and play the sport and have fun,” said Jennifer Dean, a breast cancer survivor and one of the organizers.

The tournament raised more than $7,000.

The event used to span across the Roanoke Valley, and organizers hope next year’s event will be even bigger.
