WATCH: Local Marine honored for saving a woman’s life

FRANKLIN CO., Va. – A local Marine was honored today for saving a woman’s life after a serious car crash.

Franklin County native Kadin Smith was awarded the “Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal” for his heroic actions.

On Nov. 22 he was driving along 220 South near Roanoke when he saw the aftermath of a car crash.

Smith jumped in to help a woman who had been thrown from her car into a ditch. He took his sweater off and used it to help stop the bleeding.

Thanks to Smith’s quick actions he saved her life, and on Tuesday her family was there as Smith accepted the award.

“I got a sense of closure knowing their daughter is beating the odds in the hospital... I did the right thing,” Smith said.

Smith joined the Marines just three months ago, which makes this a huge achievement in his young career.
