VDOT stated that with warm temperatures and the assistance of crews and contractors, the majority of main roads are cleared. Crews said that they’ve already plowed some roads numbered 600 and above, and they will be working to make the rest as passable as possible.

Keep in mind that, while the roads may be cleared of snow, slick pavement and black ice can still be dangerous. Please continue to drive with caution.

ORIGINAL STORY:

With another winter storm on the way, the Virginia Department of Transportation has warned travelers of hazardous roads in the coming days.

Below-freezing temperatures and cold pavement means roads will become snow-covered and slick quickly, especially on bridges and overpasses.

VDOT also stated that there is residual salt on the roads following Winter Storm Blair, so crews will only be pretreating selected spots that are most in need. The prioritized roads would be interstates, roads numbered 1-599, and high-volume secondary routes. Low-volume secondary routes, such as roads numbered above 600 and neighborhood streets won’t be worked on until the main roads are cleared and the precipitation stops.

VDOT has emphasized that drivers should not expect bare pavement, although crews will attempt to make roads passable. They stated that temperatures must be above freezing before the icy conditions are no longer impacting road travel.
