Rescue Mission and Homes for America unite for major housing project

New units aim to provide stability for people earning anywhere from $18,000 to $60,000 annually

ROANOKE, Va. – A new affordable housing project called The Roanoke Gateway Project is coming to Southwest Roanoke.

The new project is a collaboration between The Rescue Mission and Homes for America.

The multi-phase affordable housing development, which will include around 155 new units, will be located on a 4-acre vacant lot between Jamison and Bullitt Avenues.

The goal is to create a high-quality living space for people earning anywhere from $18,000 to $60,000 annually. A one-bedroom could go anywhere from $450 and range up to $1,400 for a three-bedroom.

“Schoolteachers, firefighters, service workers, restaurant workers who might be struggling to pay their rent. We’re hopeful that those that workforce housing like this will be able to provide affordable, good quality, safe place to live,” said Rescue Mission’s CEO Lee Clark.

10 News spoke with Mayor Joe Cobb about the new housing coming to Roanoke City.

“One of the benefits of this community is gonna be the social programming, the financial equity, learning more about how to budget and then access to other social programs that really strengthen people. So, that this might be a starting place for them, but it may eventually lead to them buying their own home,” said Cobb.

Developers are working closely with the city on zoning changes.

Meanwhile, there have been a lot of community concerns about parking, school enrollment and accessibility.

The Rescue Mission said it’s conducting traffic studies.

The group is also considering crossways for pedestrians, and it plans to work with the school system.

There will be a planning commission public hearing this afternoon where you can voice your opinions and concerns.

Lindsey Kennett will share reactions from locals, both concerned and excited about the potential development later Monday night at 7 p.m.
