Hokies continue to pump pros out of Virginia Tech baseball

The 2023 MLB draft saw five Hokies selected

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Five Virginia Tech baseball players were taken in this year’s draft, something that Head Coach John Szefc is proud of.

“The one thing we talk about in our recruiting process, the majority of guys we have get drafted out of here are not drafted out of high school, they’re usually here three years-ish, if they’re a draft-eligible sophomore like Drue Hackenburg or Tanner Schobel,” Szefc said.

“So I’d like to think we’re getting them in the right direction in a short amount of time,” he said. “I think if we can keep on the path that we’re going, and developing guys from a coaching leadership standpoint, development personalities a little bit, stronger personalities, you’ll continue to see guys that are professional athletes coming out of here.”

Round 2 pick 59: Braves selected Drue Hackenberg

Round 3 pick 80: Diamondbacks select Jack Hurley

Round 9 pick 275: Cardinals select Christian Worley

Round 12 pick 366: Mets select Brady Kirtner

Round 15 pick 457: Mariners select Carson Jones
