The European Union agency that tracks global warming says last month was the third-warmest July on record, with temperatures easing slightly for the month as compared with the record high two years ago.

Global temperatures in 2024 soared to yet another record level, but this time it was such a big jump that Earth temporarily passed a major symbolic climate threshold.

It's now virtually certain 2024 will be the hottest year on record, and the first with over 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming above the pre-industrial average, according to the European climate agency Copernicus.
