Local health officials are warning about COVID’s impact on hospitals, even as Governor Ralph Northam announces an emergency order.

In some areas, hospitals are re-opening COVID units and ICUs are nearing full capacity.

ROANOKE, Va. – COVID-19 has been in Virginia for more than eight months and health leaders are learning more about the virus every day. As of Friday, Virginia is reporting 199,262 coronavirus cases since March, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Carilion Clinic, Centra Health, Sovah Health, LewisGale Health and the Salem Veterans Affairs Hospital now exchange COVID-19 hospitalization data and prevention strategies every week. Carilion Clinic reports there are 203 COVID-19 hospitalizations across the aforementioned health care systems with 38 patients in intensive care and 18 on a ventilator. “This is us against a virus," Lewis said.

In just two weeks, leaders at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital have seen a 96% increase in positive COVID-19 cases. On Wednesday, Centra leaders said there are 34 patients with the virus. The COVID has ravished his lungs so much that he really cant use his lungs, so much that he really cant use them currently anymore to oxygenate. Centra added that for the first time in months, the Centra Southside Community Hospital hospital saw no COVID-19 positive patients. In Lynchburg, Centra leaders said the Virginia Department of Health is having a hard time getting people to answer questions.

LYNCHBURG, Va. Lynchburg General Hospital has 19,000 more masks than it did before Wednesday thanks to Panda Express. The local chain donated about 8,000 surgical masks and more than 1,900 KN95 masks. Centra officials said that months ago, the hospital and others across the country were not prepared with personal protective equipment. Hospital officials said because of the coronavirus, they go through PPE quickly and as the virus isnt going anywhere, the donation is a big help. Panda Express also donated food to hospital employees.
