El Chapo's son, Sinaloa members face sanctions over fentanyl
The United States has sanctioned a son of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, three members of the Sinaloa cartel and two Mexican-based firms, alleging they trafficked fentanyl and other drugs into the U.S. Tuesday's sanctions came the day Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was talking with President Joe Biden about immigration and the fentanyl crisis.

El Chapo to be sentenced Wednesday
(CNN) - When Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" is sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, it could be the last time the public -- and even some members of his family -- ever see him in person. But if the appeal is not successful, "then this will be the last time the public will see El Chapo," Colon told CNN. "It could be potentially also the last time El Chapo could see his wife." He is limited to phone calls and visits from certain family members, including his twin 8-year-old daughters. Guzman escaped from the Mexican prison a second time, on July 11, 2015.
Prosecutors seek life for El Chapo
(CNN) - Prosecutors on Wednesday submitted a memo asking for Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmn to receive life in prison. Prosecutors argue those counts should be dismissed because they encompass some of the same charges as count one, which is a "continuing criminal enterprise" charge. Conviction of the top charge of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise carries a mandatory term of life in prison. Jeffrey Lichtman, an attorney for Guzmn, said his team expected the life sentence recommendation from prosecutors. Last week, prosecutors asked the judge to order Guzmn to pay a criminal forfeiture of about $12.7 billion to the US government.
New York judge rejects 'El Chapo' Guzman's bid for new trial
(CNN) - A federal judge in New York Wednesday denied drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's bid for a new trial. The count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise carries a mandatory term of life in prison. Defense attorney Jeff Lichtman, in a statement, said Wednesday that the ruling further demonstrated the trial "was more of an inquisition, a show trial, than an exercise in true American justice." In March, Guzman's attorneys asked Cogan for a new trial and to recall the jurors back for an evidentiary hearing to find out if there had been misconduct. Prosecutors responded that the court's repeated instruction to jurors, their diligence during the trial, and overwhelming evidence against Guzman show that "the alleged media exposure did not prejudice the defendant."
