Tropical Storm Helene brought flooding to Radford it hadn’t seen in almost a century. Seven months after the storm, while not 100 percent restored, people are out enjoying the park as spring sets in.

When Tropical Storm Helene hit the area, places like Claytor Lake were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of debris that swept through, but four months after the storm, the lake is getting back to normal.

Recreation areas across the region were devastated by the floods from Helene, and in the City of Radford, Bissett park was no exception.

Thousands of pounds of debris are clogging Claytor Lake from Helene, and since the storm, crews have been constantly cleaning up to get it back to where it once was.

There are not a lot of folks in Montgomery County who live by the New River, but those who do were hit hard like they’ve never been hit before by all of the floods caused by Helene.

It’s been more than a week since Helene barreled through our area and yet the clean up is far from over. One place that’s still cleaning up is the Radford Animal Shelter. Flooding destroyed the building.
