Amazon's pandemic-delayed Prime Day may disappoint, Citi says

Amazon's pandemic-delayed Prime Day appears to have been more disappointing than previous years, according to a note from Citi analysts published on Friday. Citi looked at web traffic information collected by market research firm SimilarWeb and found that Prime Day 2020 web traffic was basically flat year over year, compared to almost 8% growth in 2019. Amazon's publicity around Prime Day results was also muted compared to its language in the past, Citi analysts said. Citi analysts pointed to previous Prime Day results between 2016 to 2019, wherein Amazon characterized the event as its "biggest day ever" or the "largest shopping event in Amazon history." "Based on the language of Amazon's press releases and SimilarWeb data, it appears that Prime Day 2020 was not the 'biggest day ever,'" Citi analysts said.

Amazon says third-party sellers made more than $3.5 billion from Prime Day

Amazon said third-party sellers on its marketplace earned more than $3.5 billion during this year's Prime Day shopping event, an increase of nearly 60% compared with last year and a record for the small and midsize businesses that make up the marketplace. The company, which didn't disclose total Prime Day sales, said third-party sellers' Prime Day sales grew even more than Amazon's retail business. Prime Day, launched in 2015, has grown to become one of the company's most important retail and marketing events. In 2019, third-party sellers saw more than $2 billion in sales during Prime Day. At that percentage, Amazon stands to have generated at least $7 billion in sales during this year's Prime Day.

Holiday shopping gets early start with October Prime Day

NEW YORK – Halloween is still weeks away, but retailers are hoping you'll start your holiday shopping now. The big push is coming from Amazon, which is holding its annual Prime Day sales event Tuesday and Wednesday, kickstarting the holiday shopping season. It’s the first time Prime Day has been held in the fall, after the pandemic forced it to postpone from July. Whether people will start shopping early remains to be seen. This year's Prime Day is in 19 countries, including two new ones: Brazil and Turkey.

On deal-crazy Amazon Prime Day, online retailers decide if it's time to buckle to the bargain

Homesick candles Source: HomesickFor retailers looking to compete with Amazon around its annual Prime Day event, it's not all about offering deep discounts to catch customers' attention on the internet. Instead, around Prime Day and through this holiday season, Berger said, Mack Weldon will be boosting its marketing efforts, especially on social media. At one point early on during the Covid-19 crisis, Mack Weldon was selling 1,000 pairs of sweatpants per day, Berger said. "One of the advantages of having a strong direct channel is we don't need to compete with Amazon on Prime Day," said Jonathan Wahl, Abbio co-founder and CEO. Prime Day is "all about the 'deal' as opposed to the value of the brand or the offering," Wahl said.

How small retailers are doing Amazon Prime Day amid Covid-19 pandemic

Amazon's annual two-day Prime Day sales event kicks off on Tuesday, Oct. 13 after the coronavirus pandemic delayed the event for months. Prime Day, which dates back to 2015 and typically runs in mid-July, begins at midnight on Tuesday and runs through Oct. 14. Amazon doesn't release specific revenue numbers around its Prime Day events, but the company said it sold more than 175 million items during last year's Prime Day. Of course, not all third-party sellers on Amazon are happy about the delayed timing of Prime Day. (The 48-ounce bottles will sell for $17.59 for Prime Day, Sundlie says.)

Amazon's Prime Day is shaping up to be its most challenging one yet

With Prime Day taking place in October, Amazon's "peak season" will last longer than ever before. Amazon signals Prime Day will start Oct. 13

Amazon has made several recent moves that signal its annual Prime Day event could kick off in the coming weeks. An internal Amazon email obtained by The Verge said the two-day shopping event will take place on Oct. 13 and 14, with an official announcement set for Sept. 27. This chart shows why the holidays are becoming less important to retailers

The holiday season is less and less important for retailers, as more shopping moves online, according to a new study. For comparison, Coresight said total retail sales over the past three months climbed 4.1%, from the same three-month period a year ago. The firm called out "the ongoing trend of holiday shopping becoming less important to key retailers." It said the holiday season accounted for almost 24% of all retailers' sales in the late 1990s, but is closer to 21% today. Holiday sales have dropped the most over the years, as a percent of annual sales, for jewelry chains, the study found.

Amazon's Prime Day promotion pumped up July's total retail sales, BofA says

Boxes sealed with Prime Day tape move along a conveyor ahead of shipping from an Amazon.com Inc. fulfilment center during the online retailer's Prime Day sales promotion day in Koblenz, Germany, on Monday, July 15, 2019. Wall Street's consensus forecast is for a 0.3% gain in July on headline retail sales and 0.4%, excluding autos, according to Refinitiv. The gain was due in part to Amazon's Prime Day promotions but also the historic heatwave in much of the country. Meyer said the five-year-old Prime Day has seen a shift to higher spending each year but this year it was large. Last year, Prime Day spending was more modest, and it was negligible in 2016 and 2017.
