He also was an assistant captain in the Ryder Cup under Corey Pavin in 2010 and Jim Furyk in 2018 and is on the staff of Steve Stricker this year. The Presidents Cup was supposed to be played this year until the COVID-19 pandemic led to the Ryder Cup being postponed one year to this September. ... The Masters in November gives golf a big sendoff

It's November, and I think everybody just has to embrace that we're here and we're playing and that's a great thing." In some respects, this Masters is a celebration of what golf has done and a sendoff the sport has never had. It was quite a week for Herman, who had three birdies over his final four holes Friday simply to make the cut.

Harding Park a public course with a history of elite winners

Tiger Woods walks on the 16th hold during a practice round for the PGA Championship golf tournament at TPC Harding Park Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020, in San Francisco. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)SAN FRANCISCO Harding Park is a public golf course with a history of elite champions. The San Francisco Open finally came to Harding Park in 1944. What Would Have Been: MLB All-Star Game and British Open

There has not even been a regular season game yet because of the coronavirus. Instead of MLB's best gathering this week at Dodger Stadium for the All-Star Game, players are at their home ballparks for summer camp to prepare for the start of the season July 23-24. At least the All-Star Game no longer determines home field advantage for the World Series, like it did from 2003-16, so the absence of the game won't be problematic in that sense. TRIVIA BREAK: When was the last time MLB didn't hold an All-Star Game, and where was that game supposed to be played? TRIVIA ANSWER: This is the first time since 1945 without an MLB All-Star Game, and only the second time since the first All-Star Game in 1933.

Shane Lowry achieves Open dream, sets sights on Ryder Cup

He accomplished that in spectacular fashion Sunday with a momentous six-shot victory over England's Tommy Fleetwood to clinch his first major title at Royal Portrush. They roared him on in thunderous fashion and chanted his name in scenes reminiscent of the raucous atmosphere at the Ryder Cup. The 32-year-old described the experience of winning the Open as "surreal," saying he can't quite believe he is a major champion. "To do it here in Portrush is even more special, it is a dream come true," Lowry told CNN Sport in the Royal Portrush clubhouse during a whirlwind tour of media engagements. He won the Open at Royal Portrush in front of an excited and proud home crowd.

Lowry wins British Open in celebrated return to Emerald Isle

"I suppose I didn't even know going out this morning if I was good enough to win a major," Lowry said. Lowry made four bogeys in the toughest stretch of Royal Portrush without losing ground. Royal Portrush last hosted the British Open in 1951, the only time it had been outside Scotland and England. He joins Padraig Harrington as Irishmen to win majors, while McIlroy, McDowell, Clarke and Fred Daly are major champions from Northern Ireland. "Everyone knows we're all one country when it comes to golf," Lowry said.

Shane Lowry clinches Claret Jug for first major title

(CNN) - It was his to lose, but Ireland's Shane Lowry had no intention of letting the Claret Jug slip from his grasp as he romped to victory in the Open at Royal Portrush for his first major title. He becomes only the second player from Ireland to win a major after Padraig Harrington won three between 2007 and 2008. Fleetwood was also chasing his first major title after a runner-up spot in the 2018 US Open, but he just couldn't get close enough to rattle Lowry. "He's everyone's son in Ireland today," said former European Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance on TV commentary. But the Open's Claret Jug, and first prize of $1.935 million, is something he'd only dreamed of until now.
