CNN(CNN) - The UK Royal Navy says it will now accompany British-flagged oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz in the wake of Iran's seizure of a ship last week. The decision comes after Iran seized British-flagged Stena Impero oil tanker on Friday in the Strait of Hormuz, considered one of the world's most vital waterways for global oil supply. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani appeared to signal Wednesday that his country might be willing to release the vessel in exchange for the UK's release of a detained Iranian tanker. UK authorities alleged the tanker was attempting to transport oil to Syria, a violation of EU sanctions. Last Thursday, the U.S. Navy destroyed an Iranian drone using electronic jamming, a U.S. defense official said.

In what appear to be staged shots, it shows several crew members in various locations around the tanker. The crew can be seen talking in a meeting room, operating the ship's systems and cooking in the vessel's kitchen. But following the tanker's capture, the UK warned Iran that it would take "robust" action in response to the incident. The UK said the Stena Impero was within Omani territorial waters exercising "the lawful right of transit passage in an international strait." "The Iranians likely see the seizure of the Stena Impero as payback," said Naysan Rafati, Iran analyst at the Crisis Group in Washington.

Iran said the vessel was not seized, just "shortly stopped and briefed by Iranian authorities," Press TV reported citing unnamed Iranian military sources. Iran's actions in the Strait came just hours after authorities in Gibraltar agreed to extend the detention of an Iranian oil tanker in its custody for 30 days. Around 24% of global oil production passes through the narrow passage, and it's the only way to ship oil out of the Persian Gulf. The Stena Impero's seizure marks the latest in series of accelerating maritime incidents in the Gulf region between Iranian, UK and US military forces.
