Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has granted clemency to a fired police sergeant who shot and killed an unarmed man accused of stealing sunglasses.

Governor Glenn Youngkin has commuted the sentence of a former Virginia police sergeant, stating that the court’s sentence is “unjust and violates the cornerstone of our justice system.”

A jury on Friday acquitted a former police officer in Virginia of involuntary manslaughter after he fatally shot a shoplifting suspect last year outside a busy shopping mall.
