Chatham man dies in Franklin County crash

section of Route 40 in Franklin County is now open after a crash at 5 p.m. Saturday.  All lanes were blocked.

The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into the fatal crash that killed a Chatman man on Route 40, just east of Route 706 in Franklin County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier that was being operated by Richard Davis Jr., 57, was traveling westbound on Route 40 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a 1993 Toyota pick up that was traveling eastbound. Davis was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash but died at the scene. 


The driver of the Toyota pickup, 42-year-old Timothy Warren Thompson of Gladehill, was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for injuries. Police cannot comment on his condition due to HIPPA regulations.


The Virginia State Police accident reconstruction team was called to assist with the crash investigation.
