LEXINGTON (WSLS 10) - Lexington Coffee Roasters has been awarded the number 9 spot on CoffeeReview.com's list of the Top 30 Coffees of 2014.

The brand was cited for its Kenya Kikai coffee, which reviewer Ken Davids called "almost perfectly structured." Lexington Coffee Roasters was the only roaster in the mid-Atlantic region to make the list and one of only four from the East Coast.

Coffee Review ranks coffees on a 100-point scale and publishes reviews throughout the year. In announcing 2014's Top 30 Coffees, publication spokesman Ron Walters explained that the staff had tasted thousands of coffees during the year and published reviews of roughly 350.

From these, Coffee Review says its list of the Top 30 coffees was based on quality, value, distinctiveness of style, uniqueness of origin or tree variety, and rarity.

Lexington's Kikai earned 95 points in a review last July that applauded the coffee's peach, plum and black currant flavor notes, its "Crisply sweet, nuanced acidity" and its "silky, buoyant mouthfeel". The coffee is grown by the Kikai cooperative of small farms on the slopes of Mt. Elgon, an ancient volcano in the Bungoma region of western Kenya.

Lexington's coffee is sold online, in independent coffeehouses, and at two company-owned locations: the Roastery and Espresso Bar on N. Lee Highway and the Tasting Room on N. Main St. in Lexington.
