Loudoun County Supervisor Shawn Williams was arrested for assaulting his then-girlfriend.

Records from the time indicate he grabbed her hair, struck her in face and body and knocked her to the ground. Williams resigned his post as vice-chair saying he did not want to create problems for his fellow board members in Loudoun County.

At this point, he still holds a regular seat on the board.

Williams, a Republican, said the incident has caused guilt and came during a time of grief and binge drinking.

He said after the incident he received treatment for alcohol abuse and other symptoms related to a personality disorder.

Williams had been running to be the chair of the board.
