Virginia Tech was selected because of its military community and programs to help veterans. According to the university, Virginia Tech employs more than 300 veterans. The university is fully committed to equal employment opportunity and affirmative action for covered veterans.

Additionally, the university has more than 200 student veterans enrolled in classes.

More than a dozen people showed. Some traveled from Maryland and North Carolina.

"They've been in business for a number of years-- some of them. Some are just starting out and they're wanting to make sure they're doing things right or things they can learn. That's with the whole concept of this is to bring ideas and also the resources that they can follow up," said U.S. Small Business Administration district director Carl Knoblock.

The one day course focused on steps for evaluating business concepts, developing a business plan and offering resources to help access start-up money.
