BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Virginia Tech officials say due to construction work, Drillfield Drive between Kent Street and Stanger Street will be closed to vehicles beginning May 18 and will not reopen until August.
In addition, they say Alumni Mall will be closed from the Torgersen Bridge to the intersection with Drillfield Drive. Drillfield Drive is being converted into a two-way road between Kent Street and Stanger Street.

Construction crews will transform the traffic islands at Stanger and Kent streets, paint traffic stripes, install signage, and add other safety improvements.
In addition, crews will make repairs to the façade of Torgersen Bridge, officials say.
Drivers can expect the following impacts:
- Traffic on Alumni Mall heading toward the Drillfield will be directed to turn around just before the Torgersen Bridge.
- Traffic on Kent Street heading toward the Drillfield will be directed to turn around in the University Bookstore parking lot.
- Traffic on the War Memorial Gym side of the Drillfield will be directed to Kent Street.
- Traffic on Stager Street heading toward the Drillfield will not be affected. Stanger Street is the only way for vehicles to access the Burruss Hall side of the Drillfield.
In addition, Perry Street will remain closed during the summer as construction of the classroom building continues.
