Roanoke (WSLS) - Four local police departments are working to reduce the amount of impaired driving that happens in the Roanoke Valley.
A grant proposal will soon be submitted to the DMV, requesting money for a Roanoke Valley DUI Task Force. The Task Force would increase police efforts. More checkpoints, saturation patrols, and bar checks could be a result of the new group. Roanoke County, Roanoke City, Vinton, and Salem would all be members.

Roanoke County Police Chief Howard Hall feels a regional approach would be effective. The departments have had success teaming up previously. Last year, a regional drug task force was created. Efforts have led to multiple arrests.
Hall says the proposal will be submitted to the DMV in the near future. If awarded the money, each locality's governing body would have to approve of the new task force.
