VMI identifies cadet who collapsed, later died following routine physical training

LEXINGTON (WSLS 10) – Virginia Military Institute identified the cadet who died Monday as 18-year-old Sean Duc Hoang.

Hoang was the son of Brian and Van Ly Hoang of Fairfax and was a 2015 graduate of Oakton High School. He was majoring in biology and was a member of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps.

VMI's public information officer, Stewart McInnis, said in a statement released to the media the cadet collapsed during routine afternoon physical training.

Hoang was running during Army ROTC training when he fell. Physical training time is scheduled from 4:05 p.m to 6 p.m. every Monday.

Hoang received immediate aid from VMI medical personnel before being transported to Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, where he later died.

The state medical examiner's office in Roanoke will determine the cause of death.
