Body found in Roanoke River identified as missing Roanoke man

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The man whose body was recovered from the Roanoke River over the weekend was identified by county police.

The body recovered from the Roanoke River Saturday has been identified as 63-year old Joseph Lynn Salmon. Salmon's vehicle was found in the parking area near the Roanoke River Overlook on September 21. The National Park Service and Roanoke County Fire and Rescue conducted a search lasting several days. Family members and acquaintances also had not heard from Mr. Salmon.

Crews received a call at approximately 11:15 a.m. Saturday of a report of a male body discovered by kayakers in the Roanoke River near Explore Park, according to Roanoke County authorities.

Roanoke Fire-EMS Swift Water Team and Roanoke County Fire and Rescue extracted the body at approximately 1:15 p.m. The body was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for identification.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.
