Trial set for suspect in Lyon sisters murder case

AMHERST COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The man indicted for the murders of Katherine and Sheila Lyon in 1975 appeared in Bedford County Circuit Court Thursday morning.

Lloyd Welch Jr. was extradited earlier from a Delaware prison, where he is serving time after being found guilty of a sexual assault in a separate case.

Welch was booked into the Amherst County Adult Detention Center on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Welch asked for a court appointed lawyer. He was appointed two death penalty lawyers in case he receives the death penalty for his charges.

A control date for a jury trial is set for 9:00 a.m. November 24.

The Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz said if the case went to trial today "he would be ready."
