ARLINGTON (WSLS STORM TEAM 10) - Al Roker kicked off his second attempt at a Guinness World Record, this time delivering a weather forecast from all 50 states in just one week.
Thursday, Roker and the Today Show team made a stop in Arlington to check Virginia off his list. WSLS Storm Team 10 Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges was there to help.
It all started Friday, November 6 in Hawaii, then made his way back east. Six days from the start of RokerThon 2, it was Virginia's turn, coming in as the 29th state on Roker's long trek across the country. Kegges spoke to Roker while in Arlington. Roker said he's glad to have seen all 50 states at once.
"I've been fortunate enough to see them, but it took me a 40-year career to do it. Now I'm doing it in a weeks period of time," Roker explained.
Early Thursday morning on WSLS 10's Virginia Today, Al was able to cross Virginia off of the list as he gave southwest Virginia the forecast live on WSLS 10.
Roker said he isn't doing this just to set a new record. He's raising money for Feeding America to help end hunger across the country.
"We're trying to get people to donate so that we can help the hungry. For every dollar generated we can generate eleven meals so we want to do one million meals if we could this holiday season," says Roker.
As sleep deprived and jet lagged as he and the RokerThon crew had to be, he didn't disappoint. But as quickly as he arrived to Arlington, he was off to Washington, D.C. -- and almost into the record books all before the sun came up.
WSLS 10 was asked by the RokerThon 2 crew to submit the live broadcast with Al forecasting southwest Virginia's weather to NBC, signing WSLS 10 one the Guinness Book of World Records sheet for Roker to receive credit for being in Virginia.
RokerThon officially wraps up the morning of Friday, November 13, with his last RokerThon 2 forecast happening back at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.
