12-year-old girl talks with 911 dispatch, saves mother's life

BOTETOURT COUNTY (WSLS 10) - At one in the morning on April 18th, a team of three EMS workers rushed to a house on Andrew Drive where Diane Lowe had collapsed from an asthma attack.

She couldn't speak when she called 911, so it was up to her 12-year-old daughter Kaylee to make sure the rescue team had the information they needed to save her mother's life.

"They said I totally stopped breathing, that had never happened to me before," said Lowe.

Lowe says she's had asthma all her life, but when the most recent attack came, she couldn't speak.

"She had pretty much handed me the phone," said Kaylee Golder.

Golder says she wasn't sure a rescue would come in time.

"She had automatically just like fallen back, and I was like, I started to actually get more nervous at that point," said Golder.

"Her mom had lost consciousness, her mom was no longer breathing," said Paramedic Jeremy Goyer.

Goyer says when he found Lowe in the house, she was taking in only about 3 breaths a minute.

Within minutes, he and two other EMS crew members were able to revive her.

Golder received an award Wednesday from the fire department, for handling the emergency better than most could have.

"I was trying to mainly keep cool, because I knew that if you were acting really nervous, then the person who was having that experience would be even more nervous," said Golder.

"Kaylee did fantastic. She came and helped us out, helped 911 out, and ultimately saved her own mother," said Goyer.

Goyer says his department does outreach with area schools to make sure children know what to do in an emergency.

Kaylee says the most important things to remember in an emergency are to stay calm and always remember your address.
