Police: Man arrested after beating wife with a hammer

ROCKBRIDGE CO. (WSLS 10) - A man is in jail for allegedly beating his wife with a hammer in Rockbridge County.

James Harvey Tolley, 62, of Staunton, is being held without bond for malicious wounding.

According to a search warrant, the incident happened July 28 in front of the Super 8 hotel along Route 11 in Lexington.

According to investigators, Tolley told police he hit his wife after a heated argument.

Tolley said the argument started while they were in his vehicle, a 1999 Nissan Quest. After they got out of the vehicle, he told police he remembered going into a toolbox in the vehicle, retrieving a hammer and hitting his wife in the arm multiple times.

She was hospitalized after the incident.
