NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A teenager who was paralyzed after a swimming accident in the Outer Banks last summer died Tuesday, according to WAVY.

Trevor Claar, of Newport News, broke his neck and crushed parts of his spine when he dove into a wave and hit a sandbar last June, according to the NBC affiliate.

About a month later, he was transferred to the Shepherd Center in Georgia, where he battled an infection in the intensive care unit.

Loved ones came together to raise money to support Trevor’s recovery.

WAVY reports Trevor and his mother Jessica spent months living in hospitals and hotels, during which time volunteers worked to make their home handicap accessible.

At 19 years old, Trevor passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to a Facebook post by Trevor’s sister, Sandra.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to help with funeral expenses, made payable to his oldest sister, Sandra (Claar) Powell, 12746 Nettles Drive, Newport News, Virginia, 23606.
