Two saved after overdosing on fentanyl-laced heroin in Bedford County

Narcan used to save victims of heroin overdose

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – Bedford County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Bedford County Fire and Rescue units saved two people from heroin overdoses on Friday.

Bedford County Emergency Medical Services workers revived the victims with Narcan before sending them to a hospital.

Bedford County Sheriff’s Office vice investigators are working with other federal, state and local agencies to determine where the heroin, which was laced with fentanyl, originally came from.

Bedford County Fire and Rescue is training personnel on how to recognize and handle heroin when responding to an overdose call.

In some cases, people are lacing heroin with carfentanil, which is used to sedate large animals, such as elephants. The synthetic opioid is 100 times more toxic than fentanyl.

In May 2017, an Ohio police officer was searching a vehicle at a traffic stop when his skin came into contact with carfentinal. It took four doses of Narcan to revive him.
