Family prepares to bury Boones Mill man after hit-and-run crash

Stephen Yopp will be buried in family cemetery

BOONES MILL, Va. – A Franklin County family is mourning the death of a man who they say would help anyone in moments notice. Stephen Yopp was killed in a hit-and-run accident early Thursday morning.

WSLS 10's Irisha Jones went to Boones Mills to talk to family members about the tragic event.

Mike Yopp is going through one of the worst moments of his life. Digging a grave to bury his father.

"I got to do it because that's what he will want. I don't have money to just pay for someone else to do it and handle everything," said Yopp.

Mike says it makes the tragedy even more real.

"It's hard but the bad part is if we don't find answers we are still going to live with not knowing," said Yopp.

Called a dedicated son, father, brother and husband, Stephen Yopp was helping a teen whose car hit an embankment and flipped on Bethlehem Road. But, he was hit by a driver passing by.
Yopp died at the scene. The teen who was helped by Yopp contacted the family after the accident. The driver never stopped.

"And she said she did see the car when the car came through. She said it happened so fast," said Yopp.

The accident happened steps away from where most of Stephen Yopp's family lives, including his grandmother.
"She's got to sit on their front porch the rest of her life and watch.. What do you tell her? She don't know if the car to go by her house again and never even know that was the car," Mike said.
As police continue to investigate the fatal crash, Yopp also wants to the driver to come forward.
"He never turned around to look at you. It's just little stuff like that," Mike said. Stephen Yopp will be buried at the family cemetery in Franklin County tomorrow.
