State police identify man killed in I-81 hit and run

The tractor trailer that hit the man may be white or silver.


ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. – State police have identified the man killed in a hit and run on I-81. 

Donald J. Davis, 65, of Newport, Tennessee was killed around mile marker 205 early Friday morning. 

Around 1:45 a.m., a state trooper stopped to help when he saw what he thought was a broken-down vehicle. The trooper discovered David dead on the ground behind his car. 

State police say Davis was hit by a tractor trailer, likely a freightliner. It ran off the right side of the roadway and hit him. 

No one has been charged yet. Authorities are looking for a tractor trailer that may be white or silver, based on evidence at the scene. The plastic skirt or bumper would be missing, along with possible damage to the passenger side headlight.
