Project Sticker Shock reminds people of penalties of giving alcohol to minors

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke Prevention Alliance's Youth Leadership Group is implementing a new program to help cut down on underage drinking.

It's called Project Sticker Shock and it means you may see something different the next time you buy beer at the store.

Two girls traveled to various stores across the Roanoke Valley on Saturday, with a mission.

"I'm here to put stickers on every alcohol cardboard box to say that not to give anybody under the age of 21 an alcoholic drink," said Trinity Breedlove, a member of the Roanoke Prevention Alliance's Youth Leadership Group.

It's all part of Project Sticker Shock.

"It's just reminding the community and making sure the community's aware that alcohol isn't intended for anyone under the age of 21. We're trying to get that message out there as strongly as we can," said J.D. Carlin, youth leadership coordinator for the Roanoke Prevention Alliance.

The stickers remind people that if you give alcohol to someone under 21 or use a fake ID to buy alcohol, you could face fines of up to $2,500, spend a year in jail or lose your driver's license for a year.

"We've put 500 stickers out so far and we ran out of stickers so that makes me feel good," said Trinity.

The girls said they understand how important their message is.

"I have learned that I can make a difference in my community around me," said Trinity.

"I actually feel like I'm helping people and I really really like it," said Taylor Rooksberry, another member of the Roanoke Prevention Alliance's Youth Leadership Group.

The group hit nine stores Saturday and hopes to get even more on board in the future.

"The idea is to hopefully get enough stickers out in enough stores so that people start talking about it a little bit, like, 'Wait a minute, there's a sticker on what you bought as well?' so it just kind of overwhelms the community in that sense in a one-shot deal," said Carlin.

Project Sticker Shock is working to create a better community, one sticker at a time.
