What’s News Today: Powerball drawing, COVID-19 updates

Here’s a look at some of the stories we’ll be following today as they make headlines across the country and Southwest Virginia.

The Powerball jackpot continues to grow. The jackpot for tonight’s drawing is $410 million. The jackpot has grown since last being won in September. The Mega Millions drawing was last night.

The Selection Committee for the Virginia Redistricting Commission will meet today. The eight citizen candidates are expected to be selected from a pool of 62 finalists. The group will join eight lawmakers who will make up the committee. A panel of five retired judges will narrow down the list of candidates. The group will meet for the first time on Feb. 1.

We are expected to get an update on COVID-19 in the New River Valley. Health leaders will talk about rising cases and vaccination efforts in the region. According to the Virginia Department of Health, the New River Valley is averaging 103 new cases a day.

Also, Gov. Ralph Northam will be giving an update on Virginia’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. During his 2 p.m. update, he’s expected to talk about vaccine distribution, as well as the idea to get students back in schools.
