Roanoke County School Board discusses youth risk survey results

ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke school leaders discussed data from a youth risk survey on Thursday.

The Roanoke County School Board heard data in regards to the 2022 Youth Behavior Risk Survey, which asks middle and high school students questions regarding alcohol and drug use.

The data showed a decrease in the use of alcohol and marijuana amongst students.

However, the survey found a significant increase in mental health concerns.

Nancy Hans with the prevention council said it’s important that the schools make sure their students know what resources are available.

”So many people are important in their lives. The coaches, teachers, maybe an older sibling. This is where we really need to give a toolbox to the parents and also to the kids to know that somebody is there for you to talk to,” Hans said.

Hans went on to say that this year, there will be a big push to help students learn the dangers of fentanyl.
