Man charged with second-degree murder after missing woman’s body found in Rockbridge County

38-year-old Stormie Markland was reported missing on March 20

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police is investigating after the body of a missing woman was found in Rockbridge County this week.

Authorities say family members reported 38-year-old Stormie Markland, of Rockbridge, missing and endangered on March 20 and two days later, her body was found on Hopper’s Creek Road.

Officials told 10 News that two Rockbridge residents found her body while at the National Forest.

After further investigation, State Police confirmed that Markland died under violent circumstances and said Leland David Johnson, 44, of Lexington, was identified as a possible suspect in the case.

After consultation with the Rockbridge County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Johnson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death. He is currently being held without bond at the Rockbridge County Jail, according to authorities.

The incident remains under investigation, police say.
