Fire at Blacksburg church leaves $50k in damages

BLACKSBURG, Va.UPDATE

Crews have contained a fire at the First Church of God right off of Main Street in Downtown Blacksburg.

Authorities said the fire started in the kitchen, and traveled up the wall and into the roof.

“They said the occupant tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher, but they were unsuccessful. There were flames shooting out the side, coming out in a hole in the brick there,” said Blacksburg Fire Chief Drew Smith.

The fire was contained in about 30 minutes.

The Blacksburg Fire Department had help from the Christiansburg Fire Department, per Montgomery County policy.

We’re told there was about $50,000 in damages.
