Local Hispanic leader speaks on immigration concerns

Across the country, Hispanics and immigrants have been growing more and more anxious regarding new immigration policies set by the Trump administration.

One non-profit, Casa Latina in Roanoke, has been attempting to spread information about what immigrants and Hispanics need to hear just in case they are approached by immigration officers.

They have been speaking with many people who visit them, and they have heard their concerns.

“What do we see in terms of people talking to us or other community leaders,” Casa Latina President Jose Banuelos said. “We do see that fear and that discomfort.”

They have spoken with government officials to try and spread their message.

“[We’ve been] working with the Mexican consolidate, we’ve been receiving information from them to distribute within the Mexican community here,” Banuelos said. “It technically applies to everyone who is here undocumented.”

Banuelos says that many immigrants have been trying to stay under the radar so they don’t attract any unnecessary attention.

“Don’t make any mistake that is going to compromise his or her position as well as his or her family.”

The most important thing to remember… is to keep yourself well informed of your rights and stay in contact with your local leaders.

“Stay educated, most importantly on what your rights are,” Banuelos said. “At the same time, don’t do anything that is going to compromise your situation.”
