SALEM, Va. – The Highlanders had another stellar season a year ago. The team managed a 9-3 mark for coach Kevin Clifford, now three seasons removed from the 2014 state title. The team bowed out in the second round of the 2A playoffs to state finalist Richlands. Glenvar has won 35 games in three years against just five losses Clifford says the formula includes good people and a whole lot of work.
"We've had good players and we've had a great coaching staff. I think the testament to that is two of them have become head coaches in the last few years. We just work hard. I mean everybody works and I don't want to compare us to anyone else because quite honestly I don't know how hard other people work but I'd like to think that we work hard. You just work and I think you have to be passionate about what you do and I think our people here are," Clifford said.
"It's definitely been building ever since that team that won in states back in 2014. Ever since then it's been building. We've all just been kind of riding the wave and it's starting to crash down a little bit knowing we only have four guys left from that state championship team. We're just kind of trying to keep it up there and build it back up," Glenvar senior running back Jack Leonard said.
The Highlanders open on Aug. 25 when they host perennial Class 1A power Galax.
