Golden Eagles return experience, depth in 2017

Staunton River's state- runner-up finish was their finest ever

MONETA, Va. –   The Golden Eagles are coming off the best season in Staunton River football history, a 13-2 state runner-up run in the 3A ranks.  Coach Chuck Poston returns 25 seniors to team in the Class 3 division, which no longer holds the defending state champs.  Blacksburg moves to class 4 this season.  Fear the Wing returns after putting up record- setting numbers last year in the single wing offense.  But coach Poston is quick to emphasize that the hunter is now the hunted..

"Well it (the state finals run) definitely feeds your off-season program but one thing I found to emphasize to the kids is that not one single point from last year accounts this year, not one. Not one win from last year counts this year, so every year is a brand new year," said Poston.  "You have to start all over. You have to be humble and hungry and you have got to work even harder. The more successful you are the harder you have to work because now you know everybody circles you on their calendar." Poston said.

"I definitely think we can be better than last year. We have everybody returning, we only lost a couple lineman that's about it, " All-District senior lineman Joe Haner said.  "Since we've been having a lot of returners the past three years it's just everybody's used to it now.  All the B-team is moving up,  the JV is doing it and  getting ready for varsity.  They all know what to do and they are running it (the single wing) good,"  Haner said.

The Golden Eagles return 1st and 10 Player of the Year tailback Grayson Overstreet. He rushed for nearly 3,000 yards and 46 scores a year ago.  Staunton River opens on Aug. 25 when they host Jefferson Forest.
