Auburn girls tennis claims Class 1 State Championship

The Eagles won the team title in straight sets

BLACKSBURG, Va. – After a rainy start to the morning, requiring the teams to move inside the Burrows-Burleson Tennis center at Virginia Tech, the Auburn girls tennis team won five games in straight sets to claim the Class 1 State Championship on Thursday.

“It just took us each staying confident and not letting the points that we did lose get to us,” junior Ashley Parsons said. “It just took us being able to stay in the game and stay strong and we knew we had practiced and prepared enough to take the victory home.”

“Post COVID, I didn’t think we’d have much of a team. We came together and had some really good players,” head coach Conrad Nester said. “It’s a coaches dream, this team right here.”

The Eagles are not finished yet. They will compete in the doubles state semifinals on Friday, followed by the championship, and the singles semifinals on Saturday, also followed by the championship.
