After a rainy start to the morning, requiring the teams to move inside the Burrows-Burleson Tennis center at Virginia Tech, the Auburn girls tennis team won five games in straight sets to claim the Class 1 State Championship on Thursday.

WATCH: Auburn beats Galax to win Mountain Empire District championship

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – The Auburn Eagles beat Galax 53-41 on Friday at George Wythe High School to win the Mountain Empire District championship and secure their spot in the Region 1C tournament. Auburn’s Ethan Millirons led the Eagles with 31 points and Galax’s Cole Pickett led the Maroon Tide with 12.

Auburn volleyball excited to begin practice with Phase 3 guidelines

RINER, Va. – Under the VHSL’s Phase 2 guidelines, Auburn High School volleyball practice was pretty quiet. “We couldn’t touch a ball at all, we had to be 10 feet apart, we were pretty much just conditioning,” junior Anna McGuire said. Recently, Montgomery County agreed to move forward with the new Phase 3 guidelines, allowing the use of shared equipment. “I was super excited to actually be able to play even though its just hitting and passing,” junior Allyson Martin said. “You get to get out and see your friends every day so that’s fun, and we get to touch a volleyball and that’s what we love,” McGuire finished.

Auburn football business as usual until VHSL’s plan is finalized

RINER, Va. – The VHSL announced Wednesday three plans for high school sports moving forward, none of which included football this fall as an option. Auburn has been conditioning for a week, working on sprints, agilities, lifting, and going over plays in the classroom. Head coach Cam Akers said that they will continue to work out until a final decision is made by the VHSL. “It’s obviously different than how we’d normally do things,” Akers said. But it’s nice to see these guys come out, be resilient through this time, and come out here and get back to work,” Akers said.

Area VHSL state softball champs: One year later

Bedford, Va./Riner, Va. – Liberty High School softball was ready for the 2020 season after winning the Class 3 state title a year ago. “Really excited about what we had, but at the same time you’re constantly thinking about who youre going to play and what not,” Liberty head softball coach Mike Thompson said. The Auburn star shortstop committed to play softball at Radford, and was ready for her final season, hoping to defend Auburn’s Class 1 title. Coaches have been told to treat this new time as a dead period, which means limited contact with the players pertaining to softball. And even though Boyd is heading off to play at the next level, there’s no replacement for a high school senior season.

Auburn boys clinch Class 1 state title, second in school history

RINER, Va. – Last Thursday, the Auburn boys basketball team was patiently awaiting their 8 p.m. tip against Matthews in the Class 1 state basketball championship. “Once we saw the NCAA cancelled all their tournaments, we were like, oh no this isn’t good,” junior Reed Underwood said. “Then when we saw the VHSL cancelled all theirs, we realized, ours was probably next.”As they watched the Class 2 championship unfold, so did their fate. Auburn would be declared the Class 1 co-champions, and not play a game. “Then we were just like, we’re state champs, co-champs.”And as they rolled into the parking lot of the school that night, the Riner community was waiting.

VHSL canceling some state championship basketball games, naming co-champions

RICHMOND, Va. – This year, there will be a few more basketball state champions than normal. VHSL, Virginia’s governing body of high school sports, announced Thursday that Friday and Saturday’s state championship games are canceled due to coronavirus fears. “After continuing to assess the impact of COVID-19 and the recent cancellations throughout the sports world, we felt it was in the public interest to cancel our championship finals for Friday and Saturday," VHSL Executive Director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun said. "“While we understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our teams, we feel this decision is in the best interest of public health, including that of, most importantly, our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, families, and fans.”

Cave Spring, Auburn boys, Lord Botetourt girls advance to State Championship games in Richmond

ROANOKE, Va. – Three area teams are moving onto the State Championship showdowns this week in Richmond. The Patriots ultimately fell 59-35, Highland Springs will play Princess Anne in the state championship. They will see Green Run in the state championship. In Class 3, The Lord Botetourt girls were back in the state semi-finals, this year taking on Booker T. Washington. “I told the three volleyball girls as we were walking in, the last time you guys were here it was a state championship,” head coach Renee Favaro said.

Auburn’s Ethan Millirons leading Eagles into 2020

RINER, Va. – Star point guard Ethan Millirons is the ultimate team player for Auburn High School. “I play as hard as I can, all I care about is winning the ball game. I needed to get stronger, I needed to improve my defense, improve shooting and everything,” he said. “He’s averaging 22 points a game, almost 5 assists a game, with a lot of attention thrown his way every game. We look to him to do a little bit of everything for us.”The Eagles are currently 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain Empire District under head coach Terry Millirons, who happens to be the husband of volleyball coach Sherry Millirons.

Area schools win VHSL Volleyball State Championships

SALEM, Va. – It proved to be a clean sweep on the volleyball court for our local teams in the VHSL State Finals. Auburn rose to the occasion and soared to win its first state title since 2014. In Class 2, the Radford Bobcats were in the state final for the third consecutive season, hoping to win its second in a row. The teams said this was there first time winning a match that went to five sets this season. Lord Botetourt completes the season with a record of 31-0, with each win coming via straight sets.

Auburn travels north, gets first playoff win since 2014
