Giles reloads ‘Single Wing’ for Mt. Empire District

The Spartans are coming off a 7-4, region semifinal season

PEARISBURG, Va. – Giles entered Class 1 football and the Mountain Empire District in 2021. They responded with a 7-4 season that ended in the region semifinals with a loss to Parry McCluer.

Veteran coach Jeff Williams is entering his 15th season as head Spartans coach, which will be his 35th year with the program.

When you say Spartans, you really mean “single wing.” Giles is looking at building on last year’s success in their new classification.

Coach Williams said the unity of this bunch is an early strength.

“Right now I like the ‘togetherness’ of them. I like how they’ve come together as a team so far in the first two weeks or first nine days of practice, you know. That’s the thing that impressed me. With them, we just gotta keep working hard, get tougher each day and get more physical each day and just get better every day. You know we got decent size up-front, but we got some kids there that weren’t in there last year. We lost a couple of defensive linemen so hopefully we’re gonna be looking at a bunch of kids in there at that position this year,” Coach Williams explained.

Giles opens the season at Blacksburg on the August 26.
