Alleghany Cougars hold off Staunton in close 22-21 game

Alleghany put together an undefeated regular season in 2024. By the looks of it, the Cougars are well on their way once again.

Alleghany was on the goal line when a sly handoff to Carter bulldozed into the end zone to cap off a 17-play drive, making it 7-0 Cougars.

Staunton was knocking on the door next. Leon Woodard fumbled as he lowered his shoulder, and referees confirmed it was Alleghany ball. But the Cougars’ defense quickly made a play.

On the next snap, Des Jordan threw to Colten Jones, but the ball slipped off his hands and into the arms of Zyleke Shepard. Shepard returned it for a pick-six, tying the game at seven.

Just before halftime, Jordan went to the air again, finding Sarge Persinger, who scored like a kid in a candy shop. The Cougars held on to squeak out the 22-21 victory.
