Hill City Howlers ready to write next chapter of Lynchburg baseball

LYNCHBURG, Va. – With spring underway, Lynchburg’s Minor League Baseball team is ushering in a new era with a new name and fresh energy.

The Hill City Howlers, formerly known as the Lynchburg Hillcats, held media day Tuesday afternoon as the defending Carolina League champions prepare for the upcoming season. The rebrand has generated excitement across the city while the organization looks to build on last year’s success.

Several top prospects from the Cleveland Guardians system are returning, including pitcher Joey Oakie and infielder Juneiker Caceres. The roster also features new additions, highlighted by 6-foot-8 pitcher Wes Burton.

Erlin Cerda takes over as manager after serving as bench coach the past two seasons. He said familiarity with the roster should ease the transition into his new role.

“I feel comfortable, especially since I know most of these guys,” Cerda said. “I was here the last two years, so it’s not too much change — just being in charge and being the leader. At this level, we focus a lot on how we can improve these guys and prepare them to play in the major leagues and compete at our level.”

Joey Oakie said the team has made significant strides during the offseason.

“Everyone from this past year got in the weight room and got a lot better — pitching-wise, hitting-wise,” he said. “It’s going to be a fun year, and we’re going to win a lot of games.”

Pitcher Wes Burton said the rebrand offers a unique opportunity for both new and returning players.

“It’s an awesome opportunity to establish a new narrative and continue the legacy of success into this new branding,” Burton said. “At the end of the day, it’s still an opportunity to play the game we love, perform for the city and try to win a championship.”

The Howlers open the season on the road Thursday night at Kannapolis. Lynchburg’s home opener is scheduled for next Tuesday.
