The Parks and Recreation Department's current efforts to mentor kids is why it was chosen as one of five in rural central Appalachia to help develop a mentor program model that parks and rec departments across the country can use. Danville Parks and Recreation community recreation division director Jason Bookheimer said this will be a great learning experience. The framework for the program will be presented to the five parks and recreation departments in November and then they will start implementing it in January. About 30,000 people are expected to come during the course of the weekend. Anna Pickeral, the board president for Festival in the Park, said each year the festival evolves. "Over 42 years we have gone and added entertainment and this year we've gone and added, as they said, the 200-foot slip-and-slide," explained Pickeral. All concerts are free and begin at 6:30 p.m.On Monday, the Virginia Proud Weather Tour will be in Giles County at Mountain Lake Lodge.
