It’s been just over a month since the federal Real ID deadline went into effect.

Most airports around the United States operated smoothly as new REAL ID requirements took effect because travelers without the updated document were still allowed to move through security easily.

The head of Homeland Security says travelers who aren’t REAL ID compliant by the upcoming deadline this week will still be able to fly but should be prepared for extra scrutiny.

Virginia residents are flooding DMV offices as the federal REAL ID deadline approaches, with more than 100,000 credentials issued in March alone. Starting May 7, 2025, travelers nationwide must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, passport, or other approved federal identification to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities.

Starting May 7, U.S. flyers will need a Real ID to board domestic flights. Without it, access to certain federal facilities and nuclear power plants will also be restricted.

Voting rights groups warn legislation passed by the House requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for anyone registering to vote could disenfranchise millions of Americans.
