All you have to do is share pictures of your house, yard, or home that you’ve decorated for the holidays. 2020 has been a tough year for a lot of families, so city officials hope this brings neighborhoods together while also spreading a little cheer. The Office of Community Engagement is putting together a virtual cookbook, Breaking Bread Together"! The city wants your recipes and your pictures to go along with each page. Theyve received a handful of submissions, but their goal is to get more than 20, so they can put a book together by June.

ROANOKE, Va.- - The City of Roanoke transportation department wants to remind drivers and pedestrians to slow down at certain intersections in the city. Two rectangular rapid flashing beacons were installed at 11th Street and Orange Avenue and Dale Avenue near Fallon Park Elementary School and Fallon Park. We installed the beacon at a crosswalk leading to our River District pedestrian plaza about three years ago. The crosswalk connects the pedestrian plaza to a walking trail and a parking garage. We installed the beacon because of the high volume of pedestrian traffic and the limited line of sight for motorists.

ROANOKE, Va. - Local fire prevention experts reacted with concern after five children in Pennsylvania died Sunday in a massive house fire. Fire officials said the victims were between 8 months and 7 years old. The local fire chief said the fire is believed to have been electrical and there was only one smoke detector in the house, which was in the attic. Roanoke Fire-EMS Fire Prevention Specialist Tiffany Bradbury said she was heartbroken to hear about this incident and she wants to remind everyone that there should be at least one working smoke detector on every floor. She added that a plan could potentially include using an escape ladder to get down from a higher floor.

ROANOKE, Va. - Firefighters in one region are now better prepared to help your pets in an emergency thanks to new equipment. The Roanoke Kennel Club donated two pet oxygen masks to the fire department. The masks work just like a human mask, but are shaped to fit the face of cats and dogs. Tiffany Bradbury, the fire department's community risk reduction specialist, reached out to the Kennel Club at the suggestion of a firefighter who wanted the masks for the department's two new vehicles. All of the department's emergency vehicles now have the masks.
